Museu do Fado

A long-standing institution in the world of Lisbon’s urban song, the Fado Museum is dedicated to preserving, researching and displaying its archives on Fado heritage via its permanent exhibition on the history of Fado and the Portuguese Guitar. The Museum regularly promotes temporary exhibitions and has its own school, a documentation centre, an auditorium, a gift shop and a restaurant.

This cultural space is composed of many sites, besides its exhibition circuit: a Documentation Centre, a School (offering Portuguese Guitar classes and a singing department), a gift shop, an auditorium with a regular programme of events as well as a restaurant/café. It holds a rich documentary collection comprised of a collection of discographies, photographs, films, posters, newspapers, repertoires, sheet music, programmes, trophies, decorations, instruments and other miscellaneous objects. Visitors to the museum are invited to walk through a series of soundscapes, recreated using audio-visual equipment, to learn about the history of Fado.
