Casamentos de Santo António (Saint Anthony’s Weddings)
It was in 1958 that, for the first time, 26 couples tied the knot at the Church of Saint Anthony, as part of an initiative that aimed to make marriage possible for couples who couldn’t afford it. The tradition, which was interrupted in 1974, but later reinstated by Lisbon City Council with the same objectives, was suspended for two years due to the pandemic.
This year, 16 couples will get married on 12 June in religious and civil ceremonies.
