April at Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar
O Tom do Pomar [Invasor Abstracto #7]
Until May 26th, Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-1pm and 2pm-6pm
Free entrance
In this «occupation» of the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar, OSSO proposes to establish a set of vicinities between a selection of Pomar works, from the museum’s collection and from other public and private collections, and its sound and visual observations of the social, natural, symbolic, and material territories that “graft the OSSO orchard with Júlio Pomar’s orchard”.
The exhibition’s core is an audio record of Júlio Pomar working in his studio converted to a musical sheet. Also noteworthy in this exhibition are the paintings Man with a scythe (1945) and Study for the Rice Cycle II (1953), both presented for the first time at the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar.
The exhibition continues the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar program which, every year, seeks to cross over Pomar’s work with that of other artists, to establish new relationships between the painter’s work and contemporary art.
Júlio Pomar – 50 years since 25 April
The revolution of 25 April, 1974 caught Júlio Pomar by surprise while he was in Portugal, where he remained until June. During this period, he took part in public acts by artists, such as the concealment of the statue of Salazar at Palácio Foz and at the 10 June festival, during which 48 artists made a collective painting to celebrate the conquest of freedom. As part of the celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of 25 April, the Atelier-Museum Júlio Pomar is organising a small publication that showcases Júlio Pomar's work and reflections on this landmark moment in Portuguese history, with texts, excerpts from interviews and photographs taken in 1974.
