FUSO 2018
Celebrating its 10th anniversary and attentive to what’s happening in the world and to the questioning that surrounds the senses of resistance, existence, revolution and evolution, FUSO takes place this year under the slogan “(R)evolution and (R)e(x)sista(e)nce in Videoart”. There’ll be eight sessions from (mainly international) guest curators and two sessions coordinated by FUSO’s artistic director, Jean-François Chougnet, the result of an Open Call to Portuguese artists or artists residing in Portugal. In addition to the programmes offered by the curators, FUSO has this year invited a Portuguese artist- Daniel Blaufuks.

Daniel Blaufuks was born in Lisbon, where he lives and works.
Graduated by AR.CO, Lisbon, 1989; Royal College of Art, London, 1993; Watermill Center, New York, 1994; International Studio and Curatorial Program, New York, 2001, 2002, Location One, New York, 2003; PhD, University of Wales, 2017.
Daniel Blaufuks uses mainly photography and video, presenting his work through books, installations and films. He has a predilection for issues such as the connection between time and space and the intersection between private and public memory.

Jean-François Chougnet (France)
Artistic director of FUSO, Chougnet has dedicated his career to cultural policies. He was Managing Director of Villette, Paris (2001-2006). In 2005 he was the General Commissioner of the Year of Brazil in France. He directed the Berardo Foundation in Lisbon from 2007 to 2011. In 2011, Jean-François Chougnet became CEO of Marseille-Provence Capital of European Culture 2013. Since 2014 he is the President of the Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée, in Marseille, France.

Throughout 10 years of FUSO festival, eighteen artists were awarded in the Open Call, jury and public choices. In this commemorative session, Marta Mestre will select the most recent works in video of these artists, showing their artistic process since they have participated in the Festival.
Invited curator: Marta Mestre (Portugal)
Marta Mestre (b. 1980. Portugal) lives and works in São Paulo and Lisbon. Since 2005, Marta Mestre has worked as a curator, editor, critic and teacher. A History of Art graduate with a Master’s degree in Culture and Communication, she was curator at the Inhotim Institute, Minas Gerais (2016-2017), assistant curator at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (2010-2015), guest curator at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro (2016) curator at the Sines Arts Centre (2005-2008). In Portugal, she collaborates with the publishing company ‘Imago’ and the digital platform ‘Buala’. She has organized various projects, both individually and collectively, primarily in public institutions, with an emphasis on research into ‘counter-narratives’ and artists’ archives. She has been awarded the following prizes, among others: ‘Laboratório Curatorial/SPArte, São Paulo 2012’ and ‘Travel Grant Awards/ CIMAM 2014’. She regularly writes essays for institutions and museums and participates in visual arts award juries.

Invited curator: Bernadette Caille (France)
Bernadette Caille is editorial director and independent curator. She is curator of the exhibition “1968, quelle histoire!” at the Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles in 2018, and the author, with Sam Stourdzé and Michel Dixmier, of “Continuons le combat. Les affiches de Mai 68”, published by Actes Sud in 2018.
Invited curator: Lori Zippay (USA)
Lori Zippay is the Executive Director of Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI), New York, a nonprofit organization that is a leading resource for media art. She has been active in video art exhibition, distribution and preservation for over thirty years. She has curated, lectured and written extensively on media art and organized numerous curatorial, preservation and educational projects with emerging and established artists. She developed and curates EAI’s major collection of 3,500 new and historical media artworks, initiated its pioneering video preservation program, inaugurated and co-authored its extensive online publications and digital resources, and has developed numerous long-range projects and artistic programs for EAI.

Invited curator: Kiki Mazzucchelli (Brazil)
Kiki Mazzucchelli (b. São Paulo, 1972) lives and works in London. Mazzucchelli is an independent curator, editor and writer. Recent exhibition projects include Ivens Machado: The Raw of the World (Pivô, 2016) and the Site Santa Fe Biennial (2016). She co-founded, with Alessandra Ferrari, the Gasworks’ Brazilian Residency Patrons’ Circle in 2017, which offers a fully funded 3-months residency for artists based in Brazil. She is the editor of Tonico Lemos Auad’s monograph (Koenig, 2018) and Marcelo Cidade - Blind Wall (Cobogó, 2016). She is the artistic director of Kupfer, London, and co-curator (with Cristiana Tejo) of Residência Belojardim.
Evanthia Tsantila (Greece/Germany)
Evanthia Tsantila is a visual artist, born in Thessaloniki, Greece and lives in Berlin. In 1999 she represented Greece in the 48th Venice Biennale. Her work was shown in Cosmopolis – the 1st Balkan Biennale, the 1st Prague Biennale, the 5 th Biennale of Gyumri in Armenia, the 1st Biennale of Thessaloniki and at the parallel program of the 1st Athens Biennale, the 2nd and the 3rd Biennale of Thessaloniki. She exhibited her work in solo and group shows in numerous international institutions. Evanthia Tsantila is active in the field of curatorial practice, artistic research and education, in projects realized in collaboration with public and private institutions and organizations. Her research attempts to question and broaden the limits of the artworks’ «public appearance».

Invited curator: Reem Fada (Palestine)
Reem Fadda was the former Associate Curator, Middle Eastern Art for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project from 2010-2016. Between 2005-07, she was Director of the Palestinian Association for Contemporary Art (PACA) and worked as Academic Director to the International Academy of Art – Palestine, which she helped found in 2006. She was appointed as the Curator for the National Pavilion of the United Arab Emirates of the 55th Venice Biennale, 2012. And was recently the curator of the 6th Marrakech Biennale 2016. She curated the inaugural exhibition Jerusalem Lives at the Palestinian Museum. Fadda was awarded the 2017 8th Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement awarded by the Menil Collection.

August 27 to September 2, in the 18 panels distributed in strategic points of the city.
FUSO 2018 expands its borders beyond the already traditional gardens and cloisters of the museums of Lisbon.
In partnership with Turismo de Lisboa and Ar.Co - School of Arts and Visual Communication, FUSO creates new opportunities for young artists to show their works to a wider audience. During the week of the festival, video works created by the students of the course Cinema / Image in Motion of Ar.Co will be exhibited at a rate of one per day, in the screens of the Lisbon Channel.
