Listening in the Dark
In the room used to preview films during the Estado Novo dictatorship, the lights will go out for the audience to listen to a sound-only documentary about censorship in Portugal during the years of the dictatorship. This is a session designed to be heard, which awakens the memory of a recent past which had a profound impact on the history of Portugal.
In the darkness, eyes open or closed, we’ll be listening to the stories of those who had courage and fear; we’ll hear once-hidden sounds; and we’ll feel (hear) once again the beating of unrestrained hearts. As it ends, we’ll ask: is censorship really a thing of the past?
