Ocupation
In 2019, São Luiz Municipal Theatre is celebrating its 125th anniversary. So many years of staging so many stories.
Teatro do Vestido is putting on a theatrical project involving the occupation of the São Luiz Theatre, reflecting on its history and memory, and its current and future role in the 21st century. Occupying a theatre is a political idea, a dangerous one almost, at a time when there are few places in the city to live in. Or to work in. To occupy, then. To arrive and stay. Even without permission. Let’s talk about it. A spectacle which is both documentary and research, where not only what happened within its doors deserves to be recorded, but also in its surroundings. After all, the theatre was situated next door to the former PIDE headquarters and many of the protestors on 25th April took refuge in and around the theatre when PIDE opened fire on the crowd. For this production, the company is mobilising its long-time comrades-in-arms, the whole creative core it has worked with over the years. It aims to attract extras and interns to participate in this evocative, commemorative and restorative show, in accordance with the unique documental poetry, political and site-specific, which is the hallmark of Teatro do Vestido’s work.
