Quadros de uma Exposição | Outras Festas
A year after the death of architect and painter Victor Hartmann, composer Modest Mussorgsky visited an exhibition created in honour of the man who was one of his closest friends. His immediate impulse was to illustrate musically ten of the artist's paintings (three on display on that occasion and another seven he had access to). Pictures from an Exhibition was originally conceived as a piano suite. It was Maurice Ravel who later explored the potential of the orchestral suggestions included in Mussorgsky's score, which are performed in this concert by the Gulbenkian Orchestra, conducted by Pedro Neves.
