Four sardines from Portugal and one from Brazil have won the 2023 Sardine Contest organised by EGEAC.
This year’s fish artwork really lived up to the slogan “This April, it’s raining Sardines!”
A total of 1593 sardine creators competed this year, submitting 3267 designs (2590 from Portugal, 677 from abroad) from 64 different countries, including Bangladesh, Brazil, Scotland, Egypt, The Philippines, Jordan and Ukraine. Sardines really rained down on us from all over the world!
The winning designs are original creations inspired by Fernando Pessoa, Saint Vincent’s Panels, rice pudding, sushi and even the British illustrator Martin Handford of “Where’s Wally?” fame.
The winners are Tiago Távora Veras, Rita Martelo, Luís Gil, Eliza Borkowska, Marta Dias (misscocodasorte).
The jury for this 13th edition of the contest was made up of EGEAC staff members who, through a participative and democratic approach, voted for their favourite sardine designs.
Each of the winning sardines will receive a prize of €1500 (one thousand, five hundred euros).
During the month of June, the five winning designs will be displayed inside Lisbon buses, travelling all around the city, in an EGEAC/Carris partnership.
