The Castelo de São Jorge – Monumento Nacional has been nominated in the Castles category. Located at the top of one of Lisbon’s hills and boasting more than two thousand years of history, it is an outstanding example of Portuguese military architecture. Its walls and towers look out over the Tagus estuary, serving as an emblem of the capital’s historic centre and an iconic symbol of the nation’s identity.
The Bordalo Pinheiro Museum has been nominated in the 20th Century category. Housed in a 1914 building designed by Álvaro Machado, which received an Honorable Mention in the Valmor Prize, it is the oldest purpose-built museum in Portugal still in operation. With 110 years of history, the museum has established itself as a cultural, educational and tourist hub in Lisbon, through its promotion of the work of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro.
