Publication for the exhibition Pantalons pour attirer le vent by Francisca Carvalho, curated by Antonia Gaeta, on view at Pavilhão Branco from September 26, 2023, to January 7, 2024. Besides the essays from various authors, the publication also features exhibition views, several photographs of the works, and colored pencil drawings, some of which were not part of the show, that the artist brings forth as foundational to this series.

Ludic Process Under Construction is an architectural, artistic and participative project based on the notion of Playground as a place to construct the common in the city. This publication issues forth from the exhibition O Colecionador de Belas Artes, by Sara & André, on view at Galeria Quadrum between april 9th and june 19th, 2022. It features texts as well as photographs of the exhibition, expanded upon through over 20 interviews conducted by the artists with Portuguese collectors. These stem from an open dialogue with said collectors aiming to trace a profile, and to portray the contemporary art collecting paradigm in Portugal.

The BAC-Banco de Arte Contemporânea Maria da Graça Carmona e Costa, coordinated by the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar, has as its mission the prospecting, preservation, investigation, study, safekeeping and dissemination of contemporary documentary and artistic collections. In this context, the Atelier Museu Júlio Pomar/BAC invited the art historian and researcher Catarina Rosendo to create a cycle of conversations that would allow us to reflect and debate issues linked to artistic collections.

With more than 200 pages, this publication is the result of a research project by historians from the museum and university centres that reveals new information about the Pimenta Palace. The book provides insight into the founder of the palace, the original building, the period when a textile factory was housed here, the alterations carried out between 1833 and 1962, and the complex process of installing the former City Museum, now the Museum of Lisbon, in the building.

With a collection of texts, excerpts from interviews, paintings, posters and photographs of collective actions, this small publication seeks to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April. A date that Júlio Pomar, over several years and through various modes of expression, knew how to amplify, challenge and iconographically fix.

This work by the American researcher John Thornton presents the life of the young Dona Beatriz Kimpa Vita who claimed to be Saint Anthony and started a religious movement during the civil war in the kingdom of Congo. This movement was very popular, rebelling against the war that fuelled the growing slave trade in the Atlantic.
First published in English by Cambridge University Press, the book has now been published in Portuguese by the Saint Anthont Study and Research Centre of the Museum of Lisbon – Saint Anthony (Museu de Lisboa – Santo António).

A publication that gathers photographs of the 197 thrones and its authors, from 22 parishes, of the street exhibition Saint Anthony’s Thrones 2023 – a yearly event held throughout June, in which the Lisbon population pays homage to Saint Anthony.

LU.CA – Teatro Luís de Camões, the only theatre in Portugal with a programme dedicated exclusively for children and young people, celebrated its first five years in 2023. To mark this significant date, we launched a book that captures the history of a building that has already lived many lives. In other words, a book that shows us how a small Theatre of the King was transformed into a space for children, who are just as important as grown-ups.

Published by the Saint Anthony Studies and Research Centre at Museu de Lisboa – Santo António (Museum of Lisbon – Saint Anthony), this edition brings together texts that reflect how, from the north to the south of Portugal, countless legends and prodigies carried out by Santo António have been reported from the 17th century to the present.

This edition explores Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro’s relationship with Brazil, the country where he lived between 1875 and 1879, and the way in which this experience was significant in his evolution as a cartoonist.

Catalogue of the collective exhibition “Mater”, on view at the Pavilhão Branco between March 23 and June 11, 2023, with works by Maja Escher, Marta Castelo and Virgínia Fróis, curated by João Rolaça – Oficinas do Convento.
The publication contains photographic records of the exhibition, texts and also visual essays carried out by each of the artists.

Part of the collection “Castelo de Lisboa”, this work brings together a set of unpublished articles, presented in chronological order, in which information is presented about the Castle and the hill on which it was born.

In the second volume of the “Castelo de São Jorge” collection, 199 historical documentary sources are brought together. Some are already known, but most of them unpublished, contributing to the deepening of knowledge about the Castle and about Lisbon’s past.

Launched as part of the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of Expo ’98, with texts by António Mega Ferreira and photographs by Kenton Thatcher, the book is dedicated to the author’s relationship with the Castle and the city of Lisbon.

Published for the first time in Presença magazine (July 1933) the poem “Tabacaria” by Álvaro de Campos is one of Fernando Pessoa‘s best-known and most admired. On the 90th anniversary of the publication, Casa Fernando Pessoa produced this special edition.

In this catalogue of the temporary exhibition with the same name, texts by several authors address different themes about the saint: the time he lived in Portugal, the two cities he inhabited and received religious training (Lisbon and Coimbra), its popular dimension, among others.

The Model of Lisbon prior to the 1755 earthquake is one of the most important works in the Lisbon Museum. In this book, 50 years of the model’s history are told, from the first idea of ​​designing a three-dimensional model representing Lisbon before the 1755 earthquake to the virtual animation program completed in 2010 and still available today to Museum visitors.

Luís Caetano Pereira de Carvalho (1862-1933) was a firefighter, but also a builder and master carpenter). These three dimensions came together in the work he patiently developed in his home over the course of 26 years: a model of Lisbon, begun in 1906 and never finished.
The result of this investigation reveals a strong creative personality, a unique methodological rigor and a rare virtuosity of an illustrious Lisbon citizen of 100 years ago.

Based on the work “Novas Cartas Portuguesas”, published in 1972, by Maria Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta and Maria Velho da Costa, the exhibition “Mulheres e Resistência – Novas Cartas Portuguesas e outras lutas”, revisited the current situation of women and their contribution for social justice and freedom, from the 1930s to April 25, 1974, highlighting their irreplaceable role over 48 years of resistance to fascism.
The resulting book extends, with new elements, the record of this tribute to all the women who fought.

The fourth volume of the magazine SCAENA, edited by the Museum of Lisbon – Roman Theatre, is, for the first time, an issue open to all who felt the need to participate and thus features no set topic.
The issue’s eight texts on varied subjects by a range of authors focus on themes as diverse as the importance to the city of the river and the sea, its supply of ice, and studies in ceramics and archaeological interventions in the area surrounding the Theatre.

The Museu Bordalo Pinheiro launched the nº0 of “A Nova Paródia”, a new humorous newspaper inspired by “A Paródia” (1900-1907), the last and iconic periodical created by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro.

Catalogue of the solo exhibition by the artist Roberto Winter, entitled “Dopamine fast – Mínimo global” which was on show at Galeria da Boavista between 3 December 2020 and 28 February 2021. It includes reproductions of the works exhibited and the reproduction of the text of the video work “Flag of Convenience” (2020).

In the summer of 2021, the TBA invited three artists. Each of them made a first draft from the experience of the previous year and a half. That piece was sent to another person, who made their draft and sent it to a third. We thus have nine pieces that respond to the times we live in and respond to each other: a chain of transmission in which only the first link was chosen by the Theatre.

Catalogue of the exhibition “Ernesto de Sousa, Exercises of Poetic Communication with Other Aesthetic Operators”, held at Galeria Quadrum & Galeria Avenida da Índia between November 2021 and February 2022, curated by Lilou Vidal. Fifth issue of the “Cadernos de Bordalo” collection, which aims to disseminate a set of reflections related to Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, his work and his time. In an essay of more than 150 pages, the theme of comics is addressed in the work Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro.

This publication is the result of the online programme “Uma peça a quatro mãos”. Part of the educational service of the Galerias Municipais de Lisboa, this programme, which took place in 2021 during the pandemic period due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, was aimed at children and young people who were at home due to the closing of schools.
The encounters flowed in a intimately public way, whose images reproduced here are the testimony of the unique experiences of the allowed proximity in such troubled times.

Catalogue of the exhibition “Júlio Pomar: Pintura de Histórias” which brought together about forty works, mainly painting, and sought to show how Júlio Pomar, since the 1980’s, has explored the various narratives, stories and myths that make up an enormous legacy of cultural references.

This book brings together around 25 letters and postcards exchanged between Menez and Júlio Pomar, from 1972 to 1982, found in the documentary assets of the two artists and provided by their respective families and heirs.
“Menez | Pomar CARTAS” follows on from the exhibition “Imagem em Fuga: Júlio Pomar, Menez and Sónia Almeida” which took place at the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar between November 2021 and April 2022.

Catalogue of the exhibition Cemetery of Anchors, a project by the artists Veronika Spierenburg and Nuno Barroso, which was on view at Galeria da Boavista between April 13 and June 20, 2021. This publication includes installation views as well as transcriptions produced from oral testimonies, recorded between 2017 and 2021, of members of the fishing communities that the artists visited during their research trips along Portuguese coasts.

This book brings together around 30 drawings by André Ruivo produced during his participation in the 2nd edition of the museum’s Artists in Residence Programme. Among several items, dialogues with Bordalo, conversations with neighbors and political cartoons are exhibited.

Was Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro an artist or a journalist? Looking at the enormous artistic legacy he left behind, the question seems almost scandalous: Bordalo was an artist, and one of the greatest! But he also revolutionized journalism over the course of 35 years.
This work summarizes the values ​​that guided Bordalo Pinheiro as a journalist – independence, creativity, innovation and critical thinking.

At the same time, aims to be an element of support for the long-term exhibition of the Museum, following the objective of systematizing and compiling existing information, produced with various contributions over the years.

Once upon a time there was a writer, an illustrator and an artist… who met at the Bordalo Pinheiro Museum. That meeting resulted in an edgy book that begins with a question: “Bordalo, what do you have to tell us?” inviting us to visit the Museum and discover new meanings in the artist’s work.

Throughout 2021, the TBA (Teatro do Bairro Alto) proposed a set of sessions to get to know and think together texts, books, as well as ideas by him.

“Walk, Diana” is a project by Diana Niepce arising from her experience of quadriplegia caused by an accident. An interior narrative based on cruelly real facts, contaminated by the artistic perspective of the author.

This storytelling contest is organised by the Aljube Museum and aims to encourage creative writing and raise awareness of active citizenship amongst youngsters and adults through the sharing of literary projects. The theme of this third edition of the contest was “Censorship”, with the jury made up of Diana Andringa (Journalists’ Union), Miguel Monteiro Barros (Association of History Teachers), Ana Cristina Silva (Portuguese Society of Authors), José Mário Leite (The Pen Club) and Luís Farinha (Aljube Museum).

Following on from the previous volume “Poetas Populares do Fado Tradicional”, the same group of writers now focuses on the most significant lyricists of the style known as Fado-Canção, with biographies, commentary on their most representative lyrics and information on when, where and by whom they were first sung.

Edited within the scope of the exhibition “Jaime Cortesão – Citizen, Patriot, Resistant” seeks to reflect on the politics and resistance of Jaime Cortesão in dialogue with his cultural matrix, mainly forged in Seara Nova  magazine and in radical republicanism.

The artistic work of Manuel Gustavo, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro‘s firstborn son, remains relatively unknown to the general public today, despite his vast body of graphic and ceramic work. Making use of the research that gave rise to the exhibition “Através do Traço”, held at the Museu Bordalo Pinheiro (Bordalo Pinheiro Museum) in 2013, we remember the man and artist and share some of his most important illustrations.

The publication “Qualquer coisa de Intermédio” accompanies the homonymous exhibition, presented by Catarina Botelho, held at Pavilhão Branco between January and July 2020.

O Corpo, a Sexualidade e o Erótico na Obra de Júlio Pomar is an installation by Salomé Lamas, about the erotic dimension in Pomar’s work. This book reveals aspects of the creative process of Salomé Lamas, as well as other contents.

The “Antes do Início e Depois do Fim: Júlio Pomar e Hugo Canoilas” exhibition is part of a series of exhibitions that the Atelier-Museu holds, every year, that seeks to find the intersection between Júlio Pomar’s work and that of young artists.

With the aim to make Júlio Pomar’s work more accessible – namely for the visually impaired – and within the context of the Júlio Pomar “Portraits” exhibition (2020), interviews conducted by Sofia Passadouro have been published in Braille.

Two interviews, from different moments in time, with different tones and thrusts, together form the foundations – almost an ABC guide – to studying and understanding this artist’s work, as well as his creative process.

This audiobook comes from the triology of performances that Cristina Paiva and Fernando Ladeira have been putting on at libraries, schools, daycare centres, preschools and theatres across the country.  Photos of these performances for young children, drawings by these children, as well as texts written by different actors are also included.

The story of a cat who gets lost from his family at Castelo de São Jorge and receives help from the peacock Jorge. This children’s book includes the following formats: easy-to-read, pictograms, Braille, large print, embossed cover, video-book in Portuguese Sign Language (LGP) and an audiobook which can be accessed via a Quick Response (QR) code.

This bilingual publication complements the exhibition “história secreta da aviação e alguns meteoritos” [secret history of aviation and some meteorites] by Manuel Zimbro, which was on view at Galeria Quadrum, between May 5 and July 7, 2019. A renowned figure in Lisbon’s cultural scene in the second half of the 19th century, Bordalo’s work is extensive, profound and detailed, inviting a reflection upon the country, the Fado scene, and his place within Lisbon society in the 1800s.

Based on an original and provocative investigation into Bordalo Pinheiro‘s relationship with trees, flowers (including wild ones), gardens and vegetable gardens in the city, the book reveals the almost unknown ecological facet of the famous Portuguese caricaturist and ceramist.

New edition of the book “No Lazareto de Lisboa” by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, first printed in 1881. After four years in Brazil, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro returns to Portugal in 1879. When he arrives in Lisbon, he is forced to quarantine in Lazareto, a building in Porto Brandão, which was meant to take in and disinfect people and objects arriving from places plagued by epidemics or infectious diseases.

Catalogue of the exhibition, held at the Museu de Lisboa -Teatro Romano (October 2020 until March 2021), presenting the results of the archaeological intervention conducted in 2019, which allows us to reconstruct the history of what could have been a Roman temple in ancient Felicitas Iulia Olisipo.

Once again, the Museum of Lisbon challenged Lisbon locals to put up their Saint Anthony throne, transforming the city into one big exhibition room, bringing special colours to the city, during the month of its Popular Saints’ Festival.

From 2020, the Museum of Lisbon – Roman Theatre will now have a magazine published once a year. The name of the publication, Scaena, is a Latin word that means “scene”, or “on stage”. This is a suitable name as it seeks to: put new learnings, different approaches, studies and essays that allow us to learn more and better learn about Lisbon city’s heritage, by putting them on stage.

We now know today, from our own memories and what we’ve come to learn about the history of the Fascist regime, that hundreds of children were brutally separated from their families, or forced to suffer the harsh conditions of prison life where they accompanied the imprisonment of their mothers. This book stems from the memories shared by these children, who weren’t allowed to be children.

In the 1970s, when Iberian dictatorships came to an end, small organisations on the Left of the political spectrum, belonging to Communist parties, gathered a generation’s intelligence and wishes. This Seminar seeks to reconsider their role within the process of democratic transition, in a comparative perspective.

Let’s celebrate the splendour of this theatre and its most important moments over 125 years of history: its relationship with the creative process, with key themes of identity, responsibility and diversity, linking these with successive national and international contexts.

At the invitation of the Cultural Center belonging to the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar/EGEAC organised this exhibition that includes a selection of different drawing themes within the artist’s work.

Winner of the 3rd edition of the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar / EGEAC 2018-19 Curatorship Award, Marta Rema has collected works in this group exhibition that address the wish to contemplate silence in its many dimensions – corporal, artistic, visual, temporal, political, real and imaginary.

This exhibition reflects upon the way the body, erotica, sensuality and sexuality interweave throughout the artist’s career that spans over more than 70 years, especially in the 1960s and 1970s, when Júlio Pomar’s work dealt more explicitly with these subjects.

The exhibition held in the Tapete de Arraiolos Interpretation Centre’s museum facilities, which displayed works from different periods and takes its name from a text the artist wrote in 1951, drew particular attention to the importance of familiarising yourself with an art piece, as well as the participation of the aesthetic experience in understanding and perception – especially seeing and feeling – within the creative process.

This publication documents the exhibition of the same name, which was open to the public at the Galeria da Boavista, between 10th May and 25th August 2019. Special edition, as every copy has a different note written by the artist.

Benjamin Rabier (1864-1939) was one of the most important illustrators in France at the beginning of the 20th century. He was chosen to illustrate “Romance da Raposa” written by Aquilino Ribeiro (1885-1963) and published in 1924. The book accompanied the exhibition held at the Bordalo Pinheiro Museum, featuring the original illustrations.

Following the “Formas do Desejo” exhibition, which launched the Bordalo Pinheiro Museum’s ceramics collection, a series of talks were held with different experts, which were transcribed in this book.

A comic that portrays Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro’s personal and artistic journey, with great historical accuracy. The book is divided up into chapters, with each chapter being illustrated by a different artist, resulting in an animated story.

Paula Rego always confessed her admiration for Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. This book unveils the influence Bordalo’s work had on the painter, proving that you can compare artistic imageries a century apart. This publication accompanied the exhibition that commemorated the centenary of the Bordalo Pinheiro Museum’s inauguration, in collaboration with the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego.

The Museu da Marioneta launches a series of thematic catalogues about its collections with this edition. Dedicated to China, this volume explores the exciting culture of Chinese puppet theatre, featuring puppets, shadows and masks from North, South and Western China, giving us a peek into the culture and diversity of Chinese performing arts.

The past and future of Torreão Poente in Praça do Comércio, one of Lisbon’s architectural and city symbols. The story begins in the early 16th century, when Manuel I of Portugal ordered a new royal palace to be built and ends with the assumption of Torreão Poente as part of the Museum of Lisbon.

The royals entering Lisbon with King Philip III was the subject of an anonymous painting that now belongs to the Schloss Weilburg (Germany) collection. The book brings together contributions from different experts in their study of this painting and the historic moment it was created in.

This exhibition uncovers the role of religious minorities and foreign residents in the construction of Lisbon’s image, between the Middle Ages and the First Republic. Even today, there are impressive and surprising testimonies from this vast population that lived in Lisbon, about a city that was made of rejection, segregation and expulsion, but also tolerance, miscegenation and integration.

For centuries, manifestations of public or private devoutness on decorated tiles were a way to the protect the house, family or different institutions, by invoking one or more saints that the person ordering them wanted. This book intends to take the reader on a journey of one of the most characteristic tiles on the city’s buildings.

During the Festas de Lisboa’18, 153 thrones were scattered across doors and windows in the city’s 23 parishes, thereby recovering a tradition and very unique popular expression that dates back to the 18th century. The book features photos of these thrones.

This book contains a valuable and sublime photographic collection, which presents a panorama view of the less well-known spiritual connection the military had for Saint Anthony. It also explains military toponomy and architecture from a religious perspective that takes into account their faith and devotion for Saint Anthony.

First publication to be edited by the Saint Anthony Research Centre at Museu de Lisboa – Santo António, which brings together the main articles written by the most important Portuguese researcher about Saint Anthony, Henrique Pinto Rema. The foreword is written by Guilherme de Oliveira Martins.

In 2019, the Museum of Aljube Resistance and Freedom promoted the second edition of the Stories Competition, in collaboration with different organisations and celebrities. Under the subject “Os Clandestinos”, the competition intended to promote participatory citizenship, creative writing and reflections on the Resistance under a dictatorship and, more especially, upon life in Clandestinity.

Commissioned by Pedro Caldeira Cabral, this exhibition catalogue accompanies the exhibition held at the Museu do Fado in 2019, which took a look at the fascinating history of the Portuguese guitar, from the 18th century up until the present day. The exhibition displayed over 50

Exhibition catalogue about José Pracana’s vast personal collection: photographs, newspapers, albums, documents, letters, musical instruments, awards, badges of honour and archived images of the TV shows he hosted. The reproduction of his retreat in Ponta Delgada also allows for a greater insight into the unique environment of the Fado gatherings that were once promoted there.

The Parreirinha de Alfama is one of the Fado houses with the longest history in Lisbon city, it has been a retreat for Fado heavyweights ever since 1939. In order to celebrate the past 80 years, the current management of Parreirinha de Alfama have decided to launch a book about the finest traditional delicacies, in partnership with the Museu do Fado.

This group photography exhibition is the outcome of the Colectivo 4:5 Project (academic year 2017/2018), working in partnership with the Museu do Fado. The authors on display here capture the Fado universe with their lenses.

This is the story of a man who, compensating for his own failure, manipulates a group of people to sit in a place together and believe in something that isn’t true.
