After the 10th Lisbon Festival Sardines Contest, exceptionally this year under quarantine, the winners of this edition are chosen.
This year the magnificent seven (6 of the general competition and 1 of the Sardine Class), will receive a €1,500 prize, 3 more sardines will get honourable mentions through an online vote by the public on the Lisbon Festivities page.
In this tenth edition of the competition, which took place between March and April, 3639 proposals for sardines were submitted (1686 more than last year), from 53 countries. 672 proposals from schools throughout the country were submitted to the Sardine Class.
From the pandemic to the environment to the Lisbon parties (at the window), almost everything served as inspiration for this year’s winning sardines, 3 Portuguese and 3 international winners (from Turkey, Italy and Canada).
The “graphic and plastic coherence”, together with “originality, legibility and technical and aesthetic qualities” dictated the choice of the winners by this year’s jury, composed of the artist Ricardo Ramos (aka Xico Gaivota who has made works with rubbish collected from beaches), the radio and television presenter Inês Lopes Gonçalves, the writer, director, illustrator and musician Afonso Cruz and the designer Jorge Silva (the “Father of Sardines”). The jury said the selection was varied and inevitably representative of the times we live today, artistically, and positively.
The “Sardinha SMILE” from E.B. 2/3 Professor Paula Nogueira school, in Olhão, joins the group of winners as the best of the Sardine Class, elected by the presenter and actress Cláudia Semedo and Jorge Silva. The jury also awarded a merit award to 2 more sardines made by students from Colégio da Bafureira, in Parede, and Escola Básica de Vendas Novas No. 1.
