O Fauno das Montanhas
With Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra
At this film music concert, the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra will accompany the 1926 film O Fauno das Montanhas by Manuel Luís Vieira. Here a digital copy of the film (restored by Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema with the support of the EEAGrants programme) will be shown as a tribute to Manuel Luís Vieira on the 70th anniversary of his death. The film tells the story of naturalist Mr Garton and his daughter Jenny, who are spending part of the winter at a Funchal hotel. When visiting Rabaçal, Jenny – romantic and full of fantasy – imagines that a 700-metre tunnel under the mountain is a gateway to hell and the guard of the shelter a faun. The film was premiered in May 1927 at the Theatro-Circo do Funchal.
