Lisbon’s ready to celebrate Christmas! Now it’s just a matter of pressing the magic button and lighting up the city, bringing new colours to its streets, avenues and squares.
The Christmas lights are a joint Lisbon City Council and Union of Commerce and Services Association initiative. This year they’ll be switched on at 18.30 on Saturday, 22 November in Terreiro do Paço, featuring a 30-metre Christmas tree. A symbolic and exciting moment that officially kicks off the festive season.
With the lights now on, we’ll be bringing you a show (also in Terreiro do Paço) created from scratch by musician, composer, singer-songwriter and producer, Diogo Clemente. The concert will feature the Orquestra do Tejo (consisting of 10 musicians), the voice of fado singer Sara Correia and the Portuguese guitar of Ângelo Freire.
The show will begin with a new instrumental tribute to Carlos Paredes (to mark the hundredth anniversary of his birth), which will serve as the soundtrack to an aerial light display combining fireworks and lasers coming from the River Tagus
Sara Correia will lend her unique voice to José Régio’s “Fado Português”, Pedro Abrunhosa’s “Que o Amor Te Salve Nesta Noite Escura” and “Quero é viver” by António Variações. In addition to the aforementioned orchestra and guitarist, she’ll be joined by bassist Frederico Gato and percussionist Joel Silva, with the promise of a special surprise at the end.
