International Museum Day at our museums

Established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977, International Museum Day, celebrated on 18 May, will explore “Museums Uniting a Divided World”, focusing on how museums can act as bridges across cultural, social, and geopolitical divides, fostering dialogue, understanding, inclusion, and peace within and between communities worldwide.

Under this theme, EGEAC – Culture in Lisbon is celebrating IMD with free and accessible events to enjoy with family or friends, starting this coming weekend.

Saturday 16th

Museu de Lisboa – Palácio Pimenta
Baroque Ball. As well as dancing, there are games, music, acrobatics, food and drink, from 3pm to 7pm

Museu do Fado
Visit to the exhibition VARIATIONS TO CARLOS PAREDES followed by musical performance featuring Ricardo Parreira (Portuguese guitar) and João Filipe (Viola), 3 pm. Admission is free, subject to registration by emailing comunicacao@museudofado.pt.

Museu da Marioneta
Guided tour of the permanent exhibition in English, at 3 pm

Sunday 17th

Padrão dos Descobrimentos,
Opening of the exhibition PADRÃO. Casa-Obsessão , dedicated to visual representations of the monument since 1940.

Monday 18th

Museu Bordalo Pinheiro
Visits to the permanent exhibition
Visits to the Toma! 150 anos de Zés Povinhos 

Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar
Will be open exceptionally on this Monday

Museu do Aljube
Visits to the temporary exhibitions Elas tiveram medo e foram and Antes de ser independência foi luta de libertação

We are also joining the European Night of Museums, which will be celebrated at the Museu de Lisboa – Teatro Romano on the 23rd, between 6 pm and midnight. Three very different tours that highlight the diversity of this space and the variety of what is preserved and researched here.
