About the space

Comprised of hundreds of artworks – paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, ceramics, collages, assemblage – which the artist donated to the Júlio Pomar Foundation and were then deposited in the Atelier-Museu, the collection reveals the trajectory of an artist who lived in different eras, periods and political situations, absorbing influences from the visual arts and moving away from them at the same time.

In addition to these artworks, the collection includes significant archives: photos, books and catalogues, newspaper articles and other historical documents.

Placing a spotlight on the collection, but also using other artworks on loan, the Atelier-Museu’s exhibition programme attests to the plurality of Pomar’s work. Working within the field of contemporary art and looking to embrace the plurality of its expressions today, the Atelier-Museu is a platform for events and exhibitions by other artists, from different generations, both national and international, emerging and well-established, proposing a dialogue with the space and Pomar’s work.

With an austere structure and polished lines that are discreetly integrated into the architecture of the local neighbourhood, the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar was designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.
