Opened in 1950 and designed by architect Fernando Silva, the São Jorge is one of Lisbon’s oldest and most iconic cinemas. Originally built with a capacity for almost 2000 people, its innovative and bold design earned it the 1950 Valmor Architecture Prize by unanimous vote.
In the early 1980s it was split into three smaller screening rooms and it was acquired by Lisbon City Council in 2001. Since then, it has undergone several modernisation and improvement works, and offers a diverse cultural programme, with a focus on national and international film festivals.
