With a programme dedicated to children and young people, LU.CA regularly presents wide-ranging artistic projects, with a special focus on the performing arts. Its mission is to contribute to the artistic and cultural education of children from a very young age, and it is the first theatre in Portugal to target this particular audience.
Opened in 1880 as part of the celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of poet Luís de Camões’ death, it is one of the oldest theatres in the city. Later, in 1911, the building would be leased out to the Belém Clube, a cultural hub that maintained its headquarters here for over 100 years. In 2018, the theatre was reopened following extensive refurbishment works by the architects Manuel Graça Dias and Egas José Vieira, earning it the Valmor Architecture Prize that year.
