Housed in a building notable for its iron and tile façade, which was acquired by Lisbon City Council in 2000, the gallery was inaugurated in 2009 following improvement and renovation works.
In 2016, it became part of the Municipal Galleries and, since then, has provided a diverse programme, including exhibitions, performances, concerts and other activities. There are artistic residencies on the upper floors, managed by Polo Cultural Gaivotas.
