About the space

A Black Box theatre, it is dedicated to creating and presenting experimental artistic projects from different disciplines (theatre, dance, music and sound art, performance), as well as the discursive practices that surround and intersect these.

Located between Rato and Príncipe Real, the former company gave it its current name in tribute to António José da Silva (the Jew), a playwright born in Rio de Janeiro, who performed some of his comedies at Teatro do Bairro Alto, also known as the Casa dos Bonecos, until he was imprisoned by the Inquisition and executed in October 1739.
